Resolutions - the right attitude!

This week’s blog is the second about New Year’s Resolutions and how to keep them. This week I am giving you some pointers as to how to approach your resolutions as having the right attitude to what you decide to do will have an effect on whether or not you achieve it, and I want you to achieve it, so here goes!
1. Keep it simple and make it real!
It is important not to complicate our resolutions. Keeping them as straightforward as possible really helps us to keep them. Focus on what you will gain from sticking to your resolutions: what you will see, feel or have when you do. This way you make it real to yourself. Be very specific about it by describing it, thinking about it and holding it in your sights. Write it down and stick it on the fridge!
2. Look in the right direction!
Make sure you look in the right direction and with the right attitude: positively into the future. Some of us mistakenly focus on what we will miss out on. For example: by deciding to eat more healthily, we focus on one small detail, like the fact that we now must not eat chocolate (ie focusing on what we did in the past), rather than the benefits of a healthy eating program such as improved physical health or how we will feel when we reach our optimum weight (ie the future).
3. Don’t be afraid to fail!
Remember to be kind to yourself. There is no such thing as failure, only results upon which to base our next decision, choice, or course of action. Successful people are people who have learned from their failures to redirect themselves and make themselves stronger. At this point I may as well tell you that I ‘failed’ to get anywhere with two books I have started during the last few years, but that this week I have written and completed the introduction to my book!
4. Be Convinced and Confident!
We must be convinced that what we resolve to do is what we really want and be committed to doing it, one of my problems with the last two books, not really wanting it! Being convinced and committed increases our belief in ourselves which gives us the confidence to achieve what we set out to do.
5. No complaining!
Once you have decided to do something, focus on it, commit to it, do it and then forget about it. Don’t talk about it too much and do not, under any circumstances, complain about how hard it is to anyone, not even yourself!
Next week we will discuss strategy. Remember, if at any time it all goes wrong, don’t fret, don’t worry, just re-assess and re-adjust according to what you have learned from your experience!!
Remember, you are not alone…
